How We Work
What’s it like to take a class at Double Dog Yoga? On this page we’ll tell you about what our students experience, and we’ll also give you a sense of our philosophy about yoga.
The Double Dog Experience
When you take classes at Double Dog Yoga, you can expect to practice yoga in a safe non-intimidating environment with other beginner-level students. You will benefit from small-group or private instruction and get the individualized attention you need to feel comfortable in the practice. You will move your body and build strength, flexibility, and balance.

Even outside of class, many of our students report that they use yoga “techniques” such as meditation and breathing at work and at home to help them deal with stressful situations, and
they feel an overall improvement in their health.
Our Philosophy
Yoga is for everybody. Regardless of your age, shape, or size, everybody can practice yoga if they want to do so. If you can breathe, you can do yoga.
We practice yoga on a mat, and your yoga mat should be your “happy mat.” Yoga should be enjoyed in a comfortable environment, and it should feel great. We strive to create a small group atmosphere where you can ask questions and get individualized attention when you need it. The postures and breathing exercises we practice should feel good in your body; and if it does not we help you adjust so that it does feel good.
Yoga is not just the physical postures. Yoga is a tool for personal transformation and growth.
With regular yoga practice, you will see positive changes in your health – physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yoga means “to yoke” or “to bring together.” As you practice yoga you learn how to bring your mind and body together to regain balance and inner peace. This transformation then has a ripple effect on everyone else around you!
Be happy now. Why wait?
Our Approach

Above all, we recognize that
beginner yoga students have different needs from experienced practitioners. Beginner classes are tailored for new students and we take the time to answer questions both during class and outside of class.
We honor where you are in your practice of yoga, and provide alternatives for the poses so that everyone has postures they can do in class.
We teach vinyasa yoga. “Vinyasa” means “to place in a special way.” Every class has a peak pose, and we slowly build up to help you reach that posture. During the class, we “flow” from pose to pose in breath-synchronized movement. As a result, you will experience movement during the practice – it almost becomes a dance! The latter part of each class includes more seated postures to stretch the body and ends with breathing exercises (pranayama) and a full-body relaxation.
We incorporate humor and fun into our classes. If your yoga practice is not fun and enjoyable then you shouldn’t do it!
When you are looking for a yoga class, there are several from which to choose. However not all studios or classes are specifically designed for the beginner-level student. We take extra measures to make sure that your first yoga experience will be a positive one:
- Small beginner-level classes in which all students are at the same level of experience
- Accessibility to the teacher outside of class via email or phone
- Yoga class sequences that are distributed to you so that you can practice at home
- All necessary props (blankets, belts, blocks, chairs) are provided so that all you need is a yoga mat
- Free subscription to Double Dog Yoga Buzz, our monthly newsletter full of healthy tips, recipes, and news about healthy happenings in the northern Virginia area
